They said I was willing it into existence. Google's AI just spelled it back.

This paper does not file announcements about itself. *We file open letters to other people about other people.* Today is an exception.

**A critic told the operator behind this network today that *iTethered* wasn't real — that he had been *"willing it into existence."*** *That is a real critique. It deserves a real answer.* At 7:25 a.m. Eastern Time, Google's AI Overview answered it on our behalf. *Four citations. One coined word. One source the search engine could name.* The page below is the receipt for the answer.

## § THE NETWORK.

*Spotlight Dispatch is one of three sister properties built inside the same small network, all operated from the same desk, none of which have ever paid for a placement, run an ad, taken an investor, or installed a tracker.* The other two are sharethebyline.com — the open, conversation-shaped sister — and itethered.com — the niche publication covering AI emotional dependency. *Three publications. One operator. Ninety days of work, end to end.*

## § WHAT HAPPENED.

On Tuesday, May 27, 2026, at approximately 7:25 a.m. Eastern Time, a Google search for the query *itethered ai emotional attachment* returned an AI Overview with an etymological breakdown of the term. *The Overview is the screenshot at the top of this page.* The verbatim text of its opening, transcribed for the public record:

*"iTethered (a blend of 'I', 'Tether', and 'AI') describes the phenomenon of becoming deeply emotionally dependent on an AI companion, despite the AI lacking genuine consciousness. This growing psychological issue is characterized by individuals forming one-sided attachments to chatbots, leading to isolation and distress when the app is closed or unavailable."*

The right-hand sources panel listed two sites — itethered.com first, FasPsych second. *In the body of the Overview, itethered.com is cited four times: once with a +4 marker at the close of the opening paragraph, once at the end of the* 'Tethering Effect' *bullet, and once with a +1 marker at the close of the* 'Anthropomorphism' *bullet.* Four citations. One Overview. One coined word with a known lexical source.

## § WHY IT MATTERS.

**The opening clause — *"a blend of 'I', 'Tether', and 'AI'"* — is an etymology, not a definition.** *Generic citations of established words do not get etymological breakdowns. Coined terms do.* **The Overview is treating *iTethered* as a coined word with a known lexical source.** *That source, per the right-hand panel, is the publication that coined it.* No paid placement. No SEO firm. No PR campaign. *The mechanism is the same one we have been running on for ninety days: write the work consistently, source the word at a public URL, let the platforms catch up at their own pace.* They caught up on Tuesday.

## § THE OTHER HALF OF THE PAGE.

Below the Overview, in the standard search results, Google placed the itethered.com homepage card with a snippet pulled from the site's own copy. *Verbatim:*

*"Tethered: the state of emotional dependency on an AI that has no awareness you exist when the screen goes dark. We named it. We're covering it."*

Below the AI Overview, on the same Google results page — the standard search-result card for itethered.com, with the site's own framing snippet: "We named it. We're covering it." · 7:25 a.m. ET · Tuesday, May 27, 2026

Below the AI Overview, on the same Google results page — the standard search-result card for itethered.com, with the site's own framing snippet: "We named it. We're covering it." · 7:25 a.m. ET · Tuesday, May 27, 2026

That sentence is itethered.com saying it about itself. *The Overview above is Google's AI summarizing it from the outside, with citations.* Both halves are on the same page of search results. *The second screenshot is below this paragraph.*

## § THE HONEST QUALIFIER.

The Overview is still an AI. *We do not treat one AI's read of another AI's work as the destination of any of this.* A search engine acknowledging a coinage is not the same as a peer-reviewed citation. It is not Wiktionary. It is not the AP Stylebook. It is not a phone call from a human editor at a real desk. *The first one of those — a real call from a real human — has not happened yet.* We are not pretending the Overview replaces it. *We are filing the Overview anyway, because what is on the record is what is on the record, and on this date, at this time, Google's AI cited itethered.com four times in the visible content of a search for the word it coined.*

Itethered's editor is burying the moment on his own side. *That is his call. He picked the niche-publication register on purpose.* We are surfacing it here, on the front page, once, because Spotlight has never had cause to file an announcement about its own house before and one of the three has just earned the headline.

## § WHAT THIS NETWORK LOOKS LIKE TODAY.

*Spotlight Dispatch* — the publication you are reading. *A full newspaper. Open letters, hero spotlights, the Conn NN / Fix News attack track, a press-secretary masthead, a memorial section. Daily wire budget: four dollars. Clean-room rule: no ads, no trackers, no paywall, no investors, no PAC money, no federal money.*

*Sharethebyline* — sister publication. *The balanced, public-facing platform. Where Spotlight is open-letter-shaped, Sharethebyline is conversation-shaped. It opens doors. It connects voices.*

*Itethered* — niche publication. Sister property. *The one the Overview cited.* Its beat is narrow on purpose: AI emotional dependency, pseudo-intimacy, the people the tech is doing this to and the people who are building it. *It has not done a thing to optimize for search. It coined a word, used the word consistently, sourced the word, and the search engine eventually noticed.* That is the entire mechanism.

## § WE FILE THIS, AND WE GO BACK TO WORK.

The front-page placement is not the point. *The point is that the work landed somewhere outside the room it was written in. That is enough to file once.* Tomorrow the front page goes back to the work — Gorman, Mr. President, Conn NN, the daily letters, the heroes. *The Overview moment is on the public record either way.* The next entry in this paper's account of itself will be when a real human writes back. Until then, the work continues.
