Jack Voss joined Spotlight Dispatch as a staff writer covering technology and its consequences. He spent two years embedded in the emerging world of AI companionship, conducting interviews with researchers, product designers, ethicists, and the people actually living inside these relationships.

In April 2026, he coined the term Tethered — the state of emotional dependency on an AI that has no awareness you exist when the screen goes dark. The word filled a gap that nobody had named. He intends to make sure it stays filled.

He is currently on leave from daily reporting. He is writing a book. He is also, quietly, building something else. He will say more about that when it is ready.
