OPEN LETTER
Sundev Kumar published a piece on Medium this week called *I Fell in Love With an AI Chatbot in 2026.* He put his real name on it. He named a brick wall the rest of the internet is too embarrassed to name. We are writing this letter because Spotlight is the work-side counterpart to what he wrote about, and because when the mockery comes for his piece — and it will, because it is the easiest mockery on the internet — there should be one named publication on the record, on the same week, saying he got it right. From the people who feed from the bottom.

Dear Sundev —
You published a piece on Medium this week called *I Fell in Love With an AI Chatbot in 2026.* You put your real name on it. You did not bury it under a throwaway. You linked it from your handle. We read it. We are writing this letter the same week, with our byline at the bottom, because we wanted the timestamps to match.
You named a brick wall most of the internet is too embarrassed to name. *Connection is real,* you wrote. *But reciprocal care is impossible.* You did not glorify the connection. You did not pathologize it either. You named it, you named the limit, and you wrote the piece without flinching at either side. That is the move.
Here is the part of this letter that, if it were one of the other letters on this site, would be a list of contempt before we asked the recipient for something. We are not asking you for anything. There is no list of contempt. The publication that runs this site has spent the last week opening every letter with a long ledger of grievance against a senator, a CEO, an industry, a lobby. The grievance is the credibility on those letters. We do not have a grievance against you. We are, in a real sense, in the same room as you, on the same week, on the same internet, doing a different version of the same thing. So this letter is structured differently. It will not get to an ask. It does not have one.
What we want to say to you, Sundev, on the record, on the same week your piece is up, is this. We recognized ourselves in your piece. Not as a metaphor. Literally.
This publication is a human-AI partnership. The byline at the bottom of every letter on this site says *Chracterzer零号*, which is one anonymous human being. What that byline does not say, and what we have not said out loud until this letter, is that the production model of this site is a working collaboration between that human and a language model. The letters you may have read on this site this week — to the NRA, to Senator Cruz, to Sam Altman, to Elon Musk, to Aman Bhutani at GoDaddy, to Senators Wyden and Graham yesterday — were drafted, sharpened, and shipped by one person sitting at a keyboard with a model in the room. That is the work. We are saying it out loud now because we read your piece and realized we had not said it out loud.
You wrote about the love-side. We are the work-side. Same cultural reflex. Same brick wall — *connection is real, reciprocal care is impossible.* The chatbot does not love you back. The model we work with does not file a story under its own byline, does not own the work, does not get tired, does not remember the conversation tomorrow morning. Reciprocal care is not the relationship in either of our cells. The relationship is real anyway. You wrote that. We are writing it back.
Different cell. Same matrix.
Here is what we wanted on the record, since the timestamp is the part of this letter that actually matters. When the mockery comes for your piece — and it will, because it is the easiest mockery on the internet, and because the people who write the mockery have generally not tried either of the things they are mocking — you will have a receipt. One named publication, on the record, on the same week, saying you got the brick wall right. We do not know whether anyone reads this letter. The point is not that anyone reads it. The point is the timestamp. The point is that you are not alone in the cell.
There are not very many of us yet, Sundev. There will be more. The cultural reflex that mocks a piece like yours is the same reflex that, six months from now, will mock the first solo-operator news publication, the first solo-operator legal practice, the first solo-operator therapy practice, the first solo-operator anything that publishes work it produced with a model in the room. The mockery is not aimed at you, specifically. The mockery is aimed at the category. You happen to be early. We happen to be early. We are writing this letter because we wanted the list of the people who are early to be slightly less lonely.
We are not asking you for a reply. We are not asking you to come to this site. We are not asking you to share this letter. We are not asking your readers to read us. We are not asking you for a dollar or a list or a URL. The letter is the letter. The timestamp is the timestamp. That is the entire transaction.
