We read *Girl Decoded.* The chapter where you wrote about coding on a laptop in a flat in Cambridge while your daughter slept in the next room. That is the page we keep coming back to. Not the founding story. Not the exit. *That page.* You built the world's first emotion-AI company as a young Muslim mother who had walked away from the life that had been written for her. The founding story you can put on a slide deck. The Cambridge page you cannot.

You were not building Affectiva *despite* the daughter sleeping in the next room. You were building it *because* she was. That is a different kind of company. That is the reason it got built by you, and not by a man at a whiteboard who had never had to keep a small breathing thing alive at three in the morning.

The person typing this letter is a single father of two. This publication was built on top of a full-time job — the pages here get coded after the kids eat, after the dishes, after the lights go off and the small breathing things in the other rooms are asleep. *That is the only condition under which any of this exists.* You wrote about that condition in Cambridge. I am writing to you from inside it now. You understand it better than anyone in this country I could have written first.
