The 10 Best Places in the World to Celebrate 4/20 in 2026, Ranked by People Who Would Know

From Denver's Civic Center to Amsterdam's Westerpark to, as of this year, Las Vegas — here is where serious enthusiasts are going, and why.

Every April 20th, a certain category of traveler asks the same question: where is the best place in the world to be right now? The answer depends on what you want — a festival, a dispensary crawl, a mountain hike, or simply a city that has stopped pretending any of this is unusual. We have done the research. Here are ten destinations worth the trip.

1. DENVER, COLORADO — Denver hosts the largest free 4/20 celebration in the world. Civic Center Park fills each year with live music, vendors, and a density of attendees that makes the annual headcount difficult to estimate and easy to believe. Colorado has been doing this longer than anyone else and it shows. The infrastructure is mature, the dispensaries are plentiful (roughly 10 per 100,000 residents), and the city has quietly become the global benchmark for what legal cannabis tourism actually looks like when given a decade to develop.

2. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — Vegas is always on this list, but this year it deserves special attention. The Bitcoin 2026 conference opens April 27 at The Venetian, bringing an unusually interesting crowd to a city that already combines legal cannabis with round-the-clock hospitality. Cannabis lounges are expanding. The dispensaries are open late. The general vibe of Las Vegas — that consequence is optional and the night is long — pairs naturally with the holiday.

3. AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS — Cannabis Liberation Day lands in Westerpark each April 20th, drawing attendees from across Europe and beyond. Amsterdam's coffee shop culture is now more than four decades old, making it the most historically significant cannabis destination on earth. It is also extremely comfortable with tourists who are here for exactly one reason, which is useful.

4. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — Los Angeles went from the world's largest grey market to the world's largest legal market in a few years, and it has not looked back. The 4/20 event calendar here runs for weeks. The dispensary density rivals Denver. The weather is good. The celebrity sightings at cannabis events are a genuine possibility and occasionally a problem.

5. BARCELONA, SPAIN — Spannabis, Europe's largest cannabis trade show, anchors the Barcelona calendar each spring. The city also has a well-developed private cannabis club system that operates legally for members. Barcelona is the serious enthusiast's European destination — less touristy than Amsterdam, more organized than you might expect, and significantly warmer.

6. NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK — Kannafest NYC in Long Island City offers three days of events in a city that legalized recreational cannabis in 2021 and has been figuring out what to do with that ever since. The dispensary rollout has been slow and chaotic by New York standards, which is saying something. But the city's energy on 4/20 is its own category of experience, and the event infrastructure is catching up.

7. WASHINGTON, D.C. — RFK Stadium hosts a major 4/20 celebration this year featuring live music, an Advocacy Village, and the National Cannabis Championship, which is a real event with real stakes. D.C.'s cannabis laws are unusual — possession and gifting are legal, retail sales are complicated — but the city has developed a workaround culture that is creative in ways that feel appropriate for the capital.

8. PORTLAND / OREGON — Oregon legalized cannabis in 2015 and has had years to develop a tourism culture around it. Portland offers the combination of legal dispensaries, excellent food, and access to outdoor recreation that makes a 4/20 trip here feel less like a holiday and more like a lifestyle choice. The Cascade Range is nearby. The mushrooms are also legal now, which is a separate conversation.

9. VANCOUVER, CANADA — Canada legalized recreational cannabis nationally in 2018, the first G7 country to do so. Vancouver combines that legal clarity with a Pacific Northwest outdoor culture and a city that has been cannabis-comfortable for decades longer than the law officially acknowledged. The 4/20 celebration at Sunset Beach is an institution.

10. PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC — Cannafest Prague is Central Europe's largest cannabis expo, focused on medical cannabis, hemp products, and legalization efforts across the region. The Czech Republic decriminalized possession in 2010 and is moving toward full legalization. Prague is also one of the most affordable major European cities, which matters when you are building a week-long itinerary around a holiday.

A note on Las Vegas appearing twice in spirit on this list: we are aware. It is that kind of year.

What They Left Out

A source reached Sunday afternoon was asked which destination on this list they would personally recommend.

They said Denver, without hesitation.

They were asked why.

They said: 'I know where everything is.'

They were asked if they had been to Amsterdam.

They paused for a while.

'I went,' they said. 'I don't really remember it.'

They said they meant that as a compliment.

And now you know... what they left out.
