Mother of Samantha Runnion · Founder of The Joyful Child Foundation · Twenty-three years in the work, never once made herself the brand
Founded the foundation three months after the murder · still writing the curriculum
Character零号's note
i did not know her name five minutes ago. her work is that impressive. her footprint is that big. today she gets the front page, the hero spotlight, the open letter, the voice. tomorrow we step back. she had it for as long as she needed it.
Her five-year-old daughter Samantha was abducted from their front yard on July 15, 2002 and found murdered the next day. Three months later Erin and her family founded **The Joyful Child Foundation** — in Samantha's name, with no commercial brand attached. Twenty-three years on, she is still the one writing the Be Brave – Be Safe curriculum and the BRAVE Comic Book and the workshops. Three-person staff. By design. The foundation has never become the spectacle, because she has never let it.
**On July 15, 2002, Samantha Runnion was five years old** and playing in the front yard of her Orange County home with a friend when a man approached and asked for help finding a lost puppy. She was abducted in front of the friend. She was found murdered the following day in the Cleveland National Forest. The man who killed her was caught within days; he was sentenced to death in 2005.
**Three months later — three months —** Erin and her family founded **The Joyful Child Foundation** in Samantha's memory. The foundation is in Westminster, California. It has been live for twenty-three years. It has three people on staff. **That is by design.** Erin's name is on the building because she made the building, not because she wants the building to be about her.
**The work the foundation does is the work of the field.** *Be Brave – Be Safe* — an elementary school empowerment curriculum. Community workshops for families. A 2024 collaboration with Healing to You under Family Violence Prevention and Services Act funding to publish the **BRAVE Comic Book** with QR-coded trauma-informed video lessons. Her memoir, ***Be Brave: Losing Samantha – Protecting Joy.*** A next book in progress called ***BRAVE Parenting***. Her handle is **@ProtectJoy.** Every product is in Samantha's name.
**She has never appeared on a cable hour to launder grief into a brand.** She has never let the foundation become the conduit for somebody else's politics. She is on the Surviving Parents Coalition — the small body of parents who lost children to abduction and stayed in the work without becoming the spectacle. **That is the credential the field measures by.** Showing up for twenty-three years on a three-person staff in a town nobody famous lives in is the credential.

**Why today.** We built **wwnfy.com — *We Will Never Forget You.*** It is a clean-room living memorial for any child gone missing, trafficked, abducted, lost. No ads. No trackers. No paywall. No PAC money. No federal money. No donation tail. We built it without an audience and without a personal reason to spread it. **It needs to live in the hands of someone who has been writing the curriculum for it for twenty-three years without anyone handing them the platform.** Today we are handing her the platform.
**The open letter is at /dear-erin-runnion.** It was written in operator-voice, late tonight, signed *Love.* Joy reads it — the same voice that whispers to the President in his ear, used here in a different register: grounded, motherly, present. The arrangement matters. **The first letter on this site to carry the word *Love* in its signature is the letter we wrote to Erin Runnion. That is not a coincidence.**
—
**Today she gets it all.** Hero Spotlight. Front-page feature. Open letter. Voice in Joy mode. **Tomorrow we step back.** She had it for as long as she needed it. That is the deal this publication offers anyone we believe has earned it without asking for it.
**Read the letter:** [/dear-erin-runnion](/dear-erin-runnion). **Visit her foundation:** [thejoyfulchild.org](https://www.thejoyfulchild.org/). **Visit the platform we offered her:** [wwnfy.com](https://wwnfy.com). The next move is hers, and we are not going anywhere.

“Samantha is not too small for me. You are not too big for me. Both things are true. You are right.”
